Phone Scammers Targeting Bensalem's Indian Community, Officials Say

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Bucks County, Pa. are cautioning residents about a phone scam that seems to be aimed primarily at the local Indian community.
In recent weeks, officials say, scammers posing as IRS employees have been calling Bensalem residents and telling them they owe money to the IRS.
Bensalem public safety director Fred Harran says the callers have specifically targeted members of the Indian community, ordering victims to make payments of hundreds of dollars -- or more.
Harran describes the scammer as saying, "the individual owes them money, and they can pay them to an address that they're given, and pay by money order. And they're threatening them by arrest if they don't make these payments."
But Harran says this is not how the Internal Revenue Service does business, and he reminds people to never give out personal information to someone who calls you.
And he says if you suspect you are being targeted for a scam, call local police, who will in turn contact the IRS.
