Philly Soccer Show: Farewell, Gabriel Farfan
By Greg Orlandini
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –- Gabriel Farfan was a fan favorite here in Philadelphia. Like his twin brother, Union midfielder Michael, he plays the game with skill, passion, and grit.
But a desire to play a more offensive role and a possible return to Liga MX, the Mexican soccer league, has led him back to his native Southern California as a midfielder for Chivas USA.
Gabriel Farfan joins KYW's Greg Orlandini and Philly Soccer Page writer Eli Pearlman-Storch on this week's Philly Soccer Show.
Farfan says he spoke with the Union coaching staff about changing his onfield role after playing as a defender for a season and a half. But a move away from the Union looked like the best option for both team and player, with the Union getting cash and a first-round pick from Chivas USA.
Gabriel speaks positively about his time with the Union.
-----
Then, philly.com writer Jonathan Tannenwald joins the show. We run down a number of topics as we preview the Union's next two games.
Next Tuesday, the Unions enter US Open Cup play with a match at PPL Park against the local USL-PDL team, the Ocean City (NJ) Nor'easters.
There's a bit of controversy with this match, as Ocean City has filed a protest with US Soccer to get the game played at their home, Carey Stadium, at Ocean City High School.
