Philly Pet Adoption 'Mega Match-a-Thon' Is This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two Philadelphia animal shelters are joining forces for a three-day pet adoption event. The goal is to match 250 dogs and cats with new families.
The Pennsylvania SPCA and the Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia (which provides animal-control services by contract to the City of Philadelphia) will be holding their "Mega Match-a-Thon" this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the lawn of the PSPCA, at 350 E. Erie Ave., in the city's Hunting Park section.
PSPCA spokeswoman Linda Torelli says a "pick your price" adoption fee will be in effect:
"Which means the adopter picks the price they want to pay. In comparison to normal adoption fees, kittens would typically be $50, cats over six months would be $30, adult dogs would be $20 to $35 depending on the animal, and our good Samaritan dogs are $225 -- those are the highly adoptable animals that help offset the costs."
Torelli says the adoption fees include spaying or neutering, initial vaccinations, an identifying microchip embedded in the animal, and one free month of pet insurance.
"The ASPCA set it up for the fall because it can be a difficult time for adoptions," Torelli tells KYW Newsradio. "When you go through the summer months there are a lot of kittens and puppies in shelters that tend to leave other animals waiting for families. In the fall we are still seeing the influx of those young animals plus the adults who have been waiting for homes."
