Philly Cops Indicted in Heroin Plot Out on Bail
Three Philadelphia police officers indicted for conspiring with heroin traffickers have been released on bail.
KYW's Kim Glovas reports the government had asked that the officers -- Robert Snyder, Mark Williams, and James Venziale -- be detained. But Judge Harvey Bartle decided instead on electronic monitoring instead.
Defense attorney Bernie Siegel represents Williams, who he says is pleading not guilty:
"They would be under 24-hour house arrest. They are not permitted out to seek employment or have employment, but they can leave to see their lawyers, doctors, or church. And they have to post certain property as collateral."
The officers are accused of setting up a scam -- which the government says was audio-taped and video-recorded -- in which two of the officers stopped one drug dealer and took 300 grams of heroin from him, and made it appear that he was being arrested.
The prosecution says that drug dealer was then going to pay the officers $6000 each for heroin that had a street value of $100,000.
