Philly Cop Arrested For Drinking On The Job
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Philadelphia police officer has been arrested and officially charged with drinking while on duty.
Patrolman William Haviland, 42, was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with operating a marked patrol car while under the influence of alcohol.
According to police officials, Haviland was on duty when he was seen drinking inside a bar in the 7100 block of Torresdale Avenue and then driving away in his patrol car.
Haviland is a seven-year veteran of the force, but police commissioner Charles Ramsey says Haviland was temporarily shifted to a civilian job, after a previous charge.
"He was arrested in Bensalem about two years ago, off duty, on a DUI," Ramsey said back in November.
Ramsey said Haviland failed a Breathalyzer after the November incident.
"And now, while on duty, he goes out and he does this … he doesn't deserve to be a police officer."
The charges follow a lengthy investigation by the Police Internal Affairs Department and the District Attorney's Office.
Haviland was assigned to the 26th District. He has been charged with DUI and other offenses, and has been suspended with intent to dismiss.
