Philly-Area Interstates, Bridges Reopen After Sandy
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Major highways in and around Philadelphia are open again after a monster hybrid storm began moving out of the area.
PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger says motorists are now allowed back on Interstates 95 and 676 as well as the entirety of I-476 and I-76.
Many other roads remain blocked by downed trees, wires or flood waters. Metzger says PennDOT pulled work crews back during the worst of the winds because of worker safety.
He says workers clearing already downed trees were endangered by other trees coming down around them.
PennDOT also reported significant numbers of closures in the Lehigh Valley and up into the Poconos. Speed and vehicle restrictions remain in effect on interstates in central Pennsylvania.
Four Philadelphia-area Delaware River bridges—the Walt Whitman, Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross and Commodore Barry—also reopened Tuesday.
