Philly Archdiocese Collects Tons of PB 'n' J For The Needy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is getting into the Season of Giving by delivering more tons of peanut butter and jelly to dozens of food cupboards throughout the region.
More than 91 schools took part in this year's PB&J drive that began at the start of the school year and ended with Nutritional Development Services director Lorraine Knight overseeing one of the final collections at Mother of Divine Grace School, in Port Richmond.
"We will now deliver it to food cupboards and pantries, community groups that call us," she explained.
Jane Lockhart, principal at Mother of Divine Grace, says her students come from modest means yet still opened their hearts to others.
"We collected over 200 peanut butter and jelly jars," she said. "We just told them the need that was in the community and throughout the city, and their generosity was overwhelming."
This year's collection drive brought in an estimated 75,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly.
