Phillies Send Vance Worley Back To The Minors
WASHINGTON D.C. (CBS) - The Phillies optioned right-hander Vance Worley to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday and are expected to fill his roster spot on Tuesday.
Worley's second stint this season on the big league roster was not as successful as his first. Worley was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in the two starts since fifth starter Joe Blanton went on the DL on May 26. In his first stint, Worley made four appearances, two of them starts, and went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA.
With Cliff Lee set to go Tuesday night, Roy Oswalt on Wednesday and a day off on Thursday, the Phillies could go, if they choose, without a fifth starter until next Tuesday, June 8 when the Dodgers come to Philadelphia.
Kyle Kendrick could take the fifth starter spot. He is 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA on the season in 15 appearances, two of them starts.
It was a tale of two starts for Kendrick. In his first start on May 7 against the Braves, Kendrick came away with a win pitching five scoreless innings. He was put in a tough spot for his last start, filling in at the last minute for the injured Blanton. On May 19 against the Rockies, Kendrick gave up five runs, all earned, on seven hits in three innings of work.
