Phillies Open Final Series Before Break In San Francisco

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies will open their final series before the Major League Baseball All-Star Break tonight as they play the first of three in San Francisco against the Giants.

The Phils just finished a series in Los Angeles where they lost three of four to the Dodgers. They actually haven't scored a run since Tuesday as they were shutout the last two nights by Clayton Kershaw (complete game) and Zack Greinke (eight innings, one-hit ball).

A good pitching match-up on tap in this series opener against the Giants. Cole Hamels will throw for the Phillies. The veteran left-hander is 5-6 with a 3.02 ERA. In his last start against the Braves on Sunday, Hamels threw seven shutout innings but had to settle for a no-decision in a game the Phils eventually won in ten innings, 4-0. Hamels actually hasn't won a game since May 23rd. In seven starts since then, he is 0-3 but he sports a very good 3.06 ERA.

San Francisco will give the ball to left-hander Madison Bumgarner to open things up. He is 8-5 this season with a 3.34 ERA. He did get hit around in his last start against Washington, allowing six runs in five innings of a 9-3 loss.

The Phillies bring a record of 29-59 into tonight's game. The Giants are 43-43.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Kevin Cooney of the Bucks County Courier Times about the Phils and the upcoming trade deadline.
