PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Phillies are set to take on the Padres in yet another day of triple digit temperatures. Ever notice that despite the heat the field at Citizens Bank Park is always green and luscious?
The secrets that can help keep your grass green during this heat wave.
Mike Boekholder is Head Grounds Keeper for Citizens Bank Park. He says keeping the Phillies' field green in the blistering heat requires balance.
"This time of the year the key becomes keeping enough water on it to keep it from wilting - keep it nice and green just the way we want it. But we also don't want to put too much water down. We start getting things too damp and it can give us problems with fungus," says Boekholder.
He says the park is equipped with an irrigation system, with 70 sprinkler heads built right into the actual playing field. Another secret to keeping the grass green in the heat?
"Don't be in such a hurry to run out there and mow it if you don't have to."
Boekholder says mowing grass too much can put stress on the blade and cause your lawn to dry out.
