Phillies Could Still Be A Suitor For Roy Oswalt
By Spike Eskin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- "Phillies Sure Up Pitching Staff With Mid-Season Move For Oswalt," is a headline we've seen before. The Phillies needed a starting pitcher during the 2010 season, and traded for Roy Oswalt to steady the staff. Don't be surprised if you read the same headline in 2012.
Oswalt announced last week he won't start the season with a an MLB team, but will stay in shape and look to join a club mid-season. While the Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals have been mentioned most as potential suitors for Oswalt, the Phillies could be interested as well.
"I believe if something would happen to one of these starters, a long-term injury, or one of these guys struggles like a Blanton or a Vance Worley or something, I totally believe that the Phillies will jump in on Roy Oswalt and pick him up. And there's precedent for it too," Todd Zolecki of mlb.com said when he joined Glen Macnow and Anthony Gargano on 94WIP on Tuesday. "Pedro Martinez man, they went after Pedro, and there's no reason why they wouldn't go after Roy. And I really believe that Roy would love to come back to Philly if the Phillies need him," he said.
"If one of those guys [Worley or Blanton] goes down, or one of the big three [Lee, Hamels, Halladay] go down, I totally believe they will make a push for Roy Oswalt," Zolecki said.
