PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A co-owner of the Philadelphia Phillies appeared today at City Hall with something to cheer about: grants totaling $16 million for programs that benefit Philadelphia schoolchildren.
John Middleton (far right in photo, holding folder) announced that his family philanthropy is donating grant money to four institutions, including the School District of Philadelphia.
"We are here today to acknowledge, thank, and ultimately support the efforts of many citizens who are committed to improving public education in Philadelphia," he said.
The grants total $16 million over four years.
The school district itself will receive nearly $6 million to support a Career and Technical Education program.
The other recipients are Drexel University, the Philadelphia Youth Network, and the Philadelphia Academies, an education foundation whose president is the mayor's wife, Lisa Nutter (at lectern in photo).
