Phillies Acquire OF John Bowker From Pittsburgh

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies have made a roster move, acquiring left-handed hitting outfielder John Bowker from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Bowker, 28, has spent most of this season with the Pirates' AAA  team in Indianapolis, where he hit .306.

He is a career .237 hitter in the bigs (228 games), but he is also a career .301 pinch hitter (22-73).

He would be eligible to be on any postseason roster for the Phillies.

To make room for Bowker on the active roster, right-hander Michael Schwimer has been optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley.   To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-hander Jose Contreras to the 60-day disabled list.
