Phillies Acquire Infielder Jayson Nix From Rays
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Infielder Jayson Nix was acquired by the Phillies from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Friday night.
Nix, 31, hit .270 (10-37) with four doubles and one home run for the Rays this spring as a non-roster invitee.
Last season, he played in 87 games for the New York Yankees and batted .236 with three home runs and 24 RBI. A right-handed hitter, he hit .266 against left-handed pitchers last year. Defensively, Nix made 48 starts at shortstop and 41 at third base along with four appearances at second base.
For his career, Nix is a .218 hitter with 37 home runs, 126 RBI and 37 stolen bases in 425 games for the Colorado Rockies (2008), Chicago White Sox (2009-10), Cleveland Indians (2010), Toronto Blue Jays (2011) and Yankees (2012-13). He has made 149 career starts at third base, 101 at second base, 68 at shortstop, 14 in left field and two in right field.
Nix is the younger brother of former Phillie Laynce Nix.
The acquisition of Nix brings the Phillies to 38 players on their 40-man roster.
