Philadelphia's Masterman Ranked Again as #1 High School in Pennsylvania

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Masterman High School, at 17th and Spring Garden Streets, is again the top high school in Pennsylvania, according to US News and World Report's annual list.

Masterman -- a Philadelphia "magnet" school  -- has repeated as the state's #1 high school in the magazine's 2014 ranking, which looks at student performance on state tests and how well the schools prepare students for college.

Masterman principal Marge Neff (below) notes the ranking is based on last year's scores, and she worries that districtwide staff cuts may jeopardize her school's ability to continue excellence.

"We continue to try and figure out ways to do what we need to do under incredibly difficult conditions,  but I have to be honest and say I don't know how much longer that can continue," Neff tells KYW Newsradio.  "There's a tipping point, and I think we're reaching that tipping point."

Masterman was ranked 52nd nationally by the magazine.  In Pennsylvania, New-Hope Solebury School, in Bucks County, ranked third, Conestoga was fifth, and Philadelphia's Central High was 14th.
