Philadelphia Zoo Welcomes Two Snow Leopard Cubs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Philadelphia Zoo is celebrating two new animal additions!

On Thursday, June 9th, the zoo's three-year-old snow leopard, Maya, gave birth to two cubs, just a little over a week after the Big Cat Falls exhibit welcomed a baby jaguar (see previous story).

This is Maya's first litter, and the first snow leopard cubs to be born at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Snow leopards have "endangered" status in the wild due to habitat destruction, poaching, and conflict with humans.

The cub's father is the zoo's five-year-old snow leopard, Amga.

KYW's Karin Phillips interviews Tammy Schmidt, curator of carnivores at the zoo, in this CBS Philly "Specials Place" podcast…
