Philadelphia Woman Gets Decades In Prison For Beating Death Of 3-Year-Old
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A West Philadelphia woman was sentenced to 28.5 to 57 years in prison on Wednesday for the brutal beating death of a 3-year-old child.
Twenty-five-year-old Nadera Batson reportedly took Jacquinn Brewton in when his mother was unable to care for him.
Over a period of three months, prosecutors say the defendant "beat the child from head to toe," using a blow torch to punish him and burning his feet so badly he couldn't walk.
On June 29, 2011, Brewton was found injured in the hallway of Batson's rooming house in West Philadelphia.
He remained hospitalized at CHOP until his death two weeks later from a pancreatic laceration caused by blows to his stomach that reportedly had "the force of a car accident."
Batson was tried on charges of Third Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Endangerment of the Welfare of a Child, and Possession of an Instrument of Crime (blowtorch).
Her boyfriend, Marcus King, was convicted after pleading guilty to third degree murder charges earlier this year.
