Philadelphia Union Supporters Hold Fundraiser To 'Help Kick Hunger' In Chester
By Cherri Gregg
CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- The Sons of Ben is a non-profit that works to develop the soccer community here in the Delaware Valley. The sports fans are also working for a good cause.
"We decided among ourselves that we didn't want to be people that just showed up in the city and left."
Sons of Ben Board Member Jeremy Sharpe says his group holds tail gates, attends Union games and just loves to have a rip-roaring good time. But the they wanted to do a little extra to leave a positive foot print, so every year at the start of the season the hold a fundraiser for the Bernadine Center that helps fight hunger in the city of Chester.
"It's called the 'Stache Bash.' We sell t-shirts and scarves that we sell through a group called Bark Tees and they donate those proceeds to an organization called Help Kick Hunger that gives money to the Bernadine Center. At the home opener at the tailgate, we have raffle items that are donated by our members and a live band. So you can come in and have a good time and all of the money raised go to our charity."
Sharpe says the t-shirts are designed by SOB members- this year's shirt features Groucho Marx with a mustache. He says Sons of Ben raised nearly $9,000 last year, with no budget and they're hoping to top it this year.
The tailgate starts at 11am in the parking lot of the PPL Stadium. For more info, visit c or http://www.barktees.com/Sons-of-Ben_c15.htm.
