Philadelphia Union In Portland To Open 2012 Season
By Matt Leon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – After an interesting offseason, the Philadelphia Union get back on the field tonight as they are in Portland to battle the Timbers.
Philadelphia is coming off the first playoff appearance in franchise history in 2011. The Union lost in the first round to Houston.
But this offseason, the Union parted ways with a couple of key contributors. Starting goaltender Faryd Mondragon returned to his native Columbia while the leading scorer in franchise history, Sebastien Le Toux, was sent to Vancouver in a controversial trade.
Philadelphia and Portland played twice last season. Union lost 1-0 in Portland and the two teams played to a scoreless draw in Chester.
KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Kerith Gabriel, who covers the Union for the Philadelphia Daily News, about the upcoming season and the match-up with the Timbers.
