Bills Coming In For January's Snowfall In Phila. More Than What Was Budgeted
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia estimates the cost of plowing out of the two feet of snow that fell two weeks ago will top $8 million. That's more than what was set aside in this year's budget.
The budget that Mayor Jim Kenney inherited from the Nutter administration set aside $5.2 million for snow removal. That, despite the fact that Mayor Nutter had spent as much as $16 million in a single fiscal year on the service.
Mayor Kenney says he had no choice but to pay whatever it cost to get roads clear.
"To get the city back to work and get people back to school," said Kenney.
He says it's not the first time the city was forced to spend more than what was budgeted and he's confident his finance director will find a way to pay for the storm and any others this year.
"Back in '96, they spend $13 million of '96 era money, to clean up 37 inches so it is what it is and Rob Dubow, who I talk to all the time when it comes to money, says we're okay," said Kenney.
