Philadelphia Sees Record Rainfall In June

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Rain, rain, go away!! Forecasters say this June has been the wettest on record for the Philadelphia area. As of Friday night, the total rainfall was at 10.11 inches and expected to rise. The previous record for the month of June was in 10.06 inches in 1938. Records date back all the way to 1872.
All this precipitation has thrown a wet blanket on many summer plans, but Meteorologist Kristin Kline with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly says this is not the new normal.
"We've just had a persistent trough that has set up over the eastern part of the country," Kline says. "So that's kept very active weather in place over the area over the last couple of weeks, leading to the scattered thunderstorm and shower activity."
And those consistent showers and thunderstorms are arriving somewhat early this year.
"Typically we do see sort of our more active peak in shower and thunderstorm activity more in the middle to latter part of summer," says Kline.
But July isn't expected to be as dreary. Kline says rainfall for the month of July is predicted to be near to slightly above average.
