Philadelphia School District Laying Off Hundreds More
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More job cuts are in store at the Philadelphia School District.
Pink slips are going out later this week for non-teaching personnel.
"We are talking about approximately 270-plus layoff notices going out, starting this Friday," says School District spokesman Fernando Gallard.
He wouldn't say in which categories the layoffs were coming, but the teachers' union says they include counselors, student advisers and other support services.
Gallard says most of the layoffs are being made at the school level, as principals decide how to spend their budgets for the coming year.
The district has placed a so-called "firewall" around next year's individual school budgets -- indicating no further cuts would be coming -- after those budgets were slashed several times in the current year.
