Residents In Philadelphia Soak Up Sun, Find Ways To Beat Heat As Temperatures Soar: 'It Feels Like July'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Beating the heat was at the top of many people's minds in the Philadelphia area Saturday. Next week might be the unofficial start of summer, but one step outside will tell a different story.
It was Saturday scorcher.
"It feels like July, like the middle of the summer," one man said. "It's way too hot."
"It's like sweating, it's so hot," Michelle Conelly said.
Inside Fairmount Hardware, the hot ticket was anything to keep you cool as the temperatures outside soared, including window air condition units and fans.
"I keep a ton in stock," Conelly, the manager of Fairmount Hardware, said. "I keep fans all year round, but as soon as it hits 70 degrees, somebody is like, 'Oh, this is too hot.'"
While some didn't seem to mind the heat, most did all they could to avoid it, including Kelsey Parham and her daughter, Leilani.
"We live right up in Brewerytown, but we had to beat the heat because it's so hot, so we didn't walk, we drove," Kelsey Parham said. "Just to, you know, get in the pool a little bit."
One-year-old Yasin also had the right idea, splashing around a fountain outside the Art Museum with his mom.
"He was excited to be in the water, and when I tried to take him out he started crying," Sherice Lynn said.
CBS3 cams were there as these kids splashed around a sprayground inside Sister Cities Park. Others opted for a cool drink or even a cool treat to combat the stifling scorcher of a Saturday.
"Hydrate, I guess, lots and lots of water," Bender said.
And after a day of fun in the sun, mom and dad may get a break of their own in the form of an early bedtime.
"She'll be exhausted, she will be so tired," Parham said.
