Philadelphia Region Taking Part In Drug 'Take Back' Day

LANSDALE, Pa. (CBS) - Saturday is the Drug Enforcement Administration's "National Prescription Drug Take Back Day."
At various sites across the region from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you will be able to turn in expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Lansdale, Montgomery County, for example, is hosting the take back at its borough hall.
"We don't want unwanted or unused prescription pills lying around for abuse purposes," explains Lansdale police Sgt. Alex Kromdyk.
"Percocet, oxycodone, antibiotics; but it's more than just what's prescribed," Kromdyk said. "It's also over the counter medicines. Cough medicines, liquid products and creams; as long as they're still in their containers."
Kromdyk called it a two-prong attack; lowering chances of prescription drug abuse in households, especially among young people, and a way to dispose medicine safely. Authorities always warn against throwing or flushing away medicine.
"These medications will dissolve but get back into the water supply system," Kromdyk said.
There will be no questions asked from authorities if you decide to drop off medication but they will not accept syringes or sharps.
