Philadelphia Rapper Beanie Sigel Arrested On Weapons Charges
TINICUM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) – Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested early Wednesday morning after police say they found a gun inside a car in which he was a passenger.
It is the latest brush with the law for the troubled rapper who is scheduled to begin a two-year prison sentence in September for tax evasion.
According to investigators, Sigel, whose birth name is Dwight Grant, was a passenger in a car driven by Gerald Andrews on I-95 southbound in Tinicum Township, Delaware County.
Authorities say they spotted the car at about 3:15 a.m. following other cars too closely and swerving out of their travel lane.
When police pulled the car over, Andrews was asked to exit the car. Police say they found several prescription bottles and a small amount of marijuana in his possession.
Sigel was then asked to exit the vehicle and police say they found approximately $4,600 in cash, along with a bottle of codeine syrup with a scratched off label.
Investigators say Sigel also had several prescription pills wrapped in plastic bags located in a cigarette pack.
After both Sigel and Andrews were placed under custody, Troopers conducted a search of the vehicle and found a firearm located in the center console.
Both Sigel and Andrews are convicted felons and are not allowed to possess a firearm.
Sigel and Andrews were transported to the Pennsylvania State Police Media barracks to be processed and arraigned.
Sigel is scheduled to report to prison on September 12th to begin serving a 24 month sentence for tax evasion.
Sigel's 6th studio album, titled "This Time," was released on Tuesday.
