Philadelphia Protesters Urge Gov. Corbett To Spend 'Rainy Day' Fund
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Education advocates opened umbrellas today outside Philadelphia City Hall, but not because it was raining.
They held umbrellas at Dilworth Plaza, just west of City Hall, to send the message to Harrisburg that it's raining now, and the state should spend its half-billion dollar surplus on schools and social services instead of putting it into the state's "rainy day" fund.
Linda Burnett, with the Flash Forward Coalition of Pennsylvania, says Gov. Tom Corbett should spend the surplus rather than hoard it:
"We're talking about kids. We're talking about seniors. We're talking about the most vulnerable people in our community, and you're not even willing to use part of the rainy day fund? It's raining now!"
Speakers said they want the legislature to restore the governor's cuts when budget votes are held later this month.
