Philadelphia Police Officers Sleeping On The Job Now Under Investigation
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police now confirm they are investigating two police officers, seen in a picture sleeping in a patrol car.
"They are two Philadelphia police officers. Apparently this happened over the weekend, I believe Friday night into Saturday morning. That's when we received the first information from citizens out there posting this on social media.," said Lt. John Stanford.
Police say the picture of the unidentified officers was taken by a civilian at an undisclosed location in the 24th Police District which covers parts of Kensington and Port Richmond.
"The investigation is underway and appropriate disciplinary action will take place," Stanford said.
Stanford says the picture, which went viral on social media, sends the wrong message about the department's dedication to serve the community. "This paints everyone with that broad brush and putting that message out there that we're not doing our jobs," he said.
Finally, Stanford says the two officers put themselves at risk if the person who snapped the picture, without their realizing it, had been someone planning to harm them.
"It's just very dangerous to have officers not paying attention to what's going on around them and for someone to be able to take a photo of these officers and they aren't aware of it. They don't wake up. Its just a dangerous situation."
