Police: On-Duty Philadelphia Officer Arrested For DUI, Assault
By Dan Wing, Matt Rivers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia police officer is in hot water after showing up drunk at the station in a patrol car early Saturday morning and assaulting a supervisor.
Authorities say 12th District officer Darryl Cathey pulled up in a marked vehicle a little after midnight with three flat tires and bent rims, which first sparked the attention of his coworkers. A Sergeant then noticed the smell of alcohol on Cathey's breath and that he had bloodshot eyes. Police say the officer could not explain how the tires were flattened.
As Cathey was being taken into custody, police say, a struggle ensued with the supervisor and other cops before he was taken for processing.
Cathey is now being charged with DUI, Aggravated and Simple Assault, and other related offenses. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has suspended him for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.
The incident is being looked into by internal affairs and the accident investigation division, which is trying to determine how and where the car was damaged.
Cathey is a six-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. He was charged in 2011 for assaulting his ex girlfriend and fired, but was reinstated in 2013 after going through arbitration.
