Philadelphia Police District Transforms Into Movie Theater

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's 35th Police District rolled out the red carpet Saturday night for neighborhood kids and parents. The movie of choice: Big Hero 6.
Police officers volunteered their time to hold a movie day for members of their community. Inspector Anthony L. Washington says he brought the idea from his previous post in South Philadelphia. He hopes this simple step builds a relationship with neighbors.
"To not see us only as people that put people in handcuffs," he says, "but also as people who are involved in the community and are part of the community."
Neighborhood block captain, Deanna, says the event was a positive way for police to build good relationships with the kids.
"It gives the kids a different outlook on the police officers," she says. "Instead of always seeing them as a bad guy, you know, to see that they are giving back to the community and they are good guys, too."
Miriam is a grandmother who brought her family of little ones, hoping to bring everyone together.
"One for all and all for one, make it right, keep us together," she says. "Form a community that we used to have back in those days."
And Inspector Washington says this event will only grow.
"We have had movie nights in the 14th Police District, in the 39th Police District and also the 5th Police District."
