Philadelphia Orchestra Readies For 10-Day Performing Trip Through China

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One day after clearing a major hurdle in bankruptcy court, the Philadelphia Orchestra is set to jet -- to China. Plans have been unveiled for the orchestra to make an historic tour as a "cultural ambassador."
The orchestra has a rich history of touring, dating back to the earliest days of its founding, 112 seasons ago.
It was the first American orchestra to perform in China, in 1973, and beginning this May 28th, for 10 days, the Fabulous Philadelphians will reconnect with China.
"This is a chance to not only perform for this eager audience, but to branch much further out from the major cities to other cities, and to engage in master classes and educational outreach," says orchestra board chairman Richard Woorley.
A key component of the orchestra's engagement in China will be to work collaboratively with the Chinese, to identify and train classical musicians.
The orchestra will perform concerts in Beijing, Shanghai, sister city Tianjin, and Guangzhou.
