Philadelphia Orchestra Patrons React To News Of Chapter 11 Filing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – With the news that the Philadelphia orchestra was filing for bankruptcy still ringing in the city's ears, some patrons of the arts shared how they were handling the news.
While the sounds of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 resonated through the building's beautiful entrance, patrons out for a stretch at intermission of the performance expressed their concerns over the future of the Philadelphia orchestra.
"The arts in general are under fire, you know, whenever we think, 'oh we need to make budget cuts or we need to tighten the belt', the first thing we think about cutting are the things that sustain us like the arts."
Some in the crowd understood the move from a business standpoint, and encouraged others not to worry about losing the orchestra.
"The fears are unwarranted, and the orchestra is still a place to attend, and within time and proper planning, hopefully it will all work out."
Most in attendance at the show were still surprised by the announcement.
"As people who don't know anything about the business side of running an orchestra, we just assumed having been here and having experienced the performances, and just the grand scale of it, we just wouldn't even think funding was a problem."
The orchestra plans to continue its performance schedule as planned.
