Philadelphia Orchestra Offers Its First-ever Tuba Concerto

By RJ McKay

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Carol Jantsch, the principal tuba of The Philadelphia Orchestra, will be playing a concerto on March 26th, 27th and 28th at Verizon Hall.

"This concerto is called 'Reflections on the Mississippi.' It's based on the Mississippi River and it sort of takes you on a trip down the river, so the movements have titles that are reminiscent of the river. It's very evocative of the American landscape and really melodic," Jantsch said.

She also explained why the concerto is special.

"Tuba concertos are pretty rare; this is, in fact, the first tuba concerto that the Orchestra has done in its entire 116-year history. So it's kind of a big deal for our instrument and the Orchestra in general."
