Philadelphia Parks & Rec Offering Free Trees For Spring Planting
By Steve Tawa
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –If you have a space in the front or back of your property in Philadelphia for a new tree, they're available for free—just in time for spring.
With the help of seed money from Wells Fargo as TreePhilly's sponsor, trees are available in five gallon containers.
"We're asking people to tell us the size they have available in their yard," says Joan Blaustein of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
She also says the trees come in two sizes: smaller trees for areas around 10 by 10 feet, and larger trees for areas bigger than 30 by 30 feet. Three or four species are available in each category.
Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources Mike DiBeradinis says they'll set up distribution events in late April.
"They'll get a little training program on how to plant and care for the tree, especially in the first two years of its life, which is really important for its eventual success."
