Philadelphia Mother Upset About Laceration Sustained By Son At Area School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Summer vacation couldn't have come at a better time for Shannon Hunter. That's according to his mom, who is still upset about what happened to her son at school last month.

"My child is messed up forever, because I don't know if his hair will come back," said Cachella Ford.

Ford is referring to the bald spot on the left side of her son's head. It looks much better now compared to pictures of his laceration weeks ago. Those pictures illustrate the deep cut Shannon sustained—a cut that required 5 staples.

On May 9th, a school incident report shows that the 5-year-old bumped his head on the sink while in the bathroom alone. It happened inside Germantown High School, where Shannon attends a Head Start program.

"They need to know that they need to hire more staff, because these children, ages 3, 4 and 5, I feel should not be unsupervised," said Ford.

A spokesperson from the Philadelphia School District tells Eyewitness News that proper protocol was not followed by Shannon's teacher. The district issued a statement that reads in part, "The child received an injury while unsupervised in the bathroom. It is District procedure that children attending early childhood programs be supervised while visiting the bathroom."

"Is it going to be we receive another child in the school with their head busted wide open, and you're not able to save them?" Ford questioned.

Ford says she is waiting for an apology from the teacher, who is still employed with the district. School officials have not released her name.

The district maintains that what happened was an isolated incident that is currently under investigation.
