Philadelphia Media Network Offering Tablets To New Digital Subscribers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More people read their news digitally from either their iPhone, iPad or their Android phones. As a result, publishers of The Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com are giving away free tablet computers to people who buy subscriptions to new digital editions of the newspapers.
The Philadelphia Media Network is planning to bundle its apps on a free Android tablet computer for digital subscribers.
The president of the company, Greg Osberg, says the price of those subscriptons hasn't been set yet. But he says increasingly, information from philly.com will be behind a pay wall.
"The print world fell into that trap when the internet was created because we all gave away our content for free. So the main thing was, is that we wanted to preserve paid content in any platform that we go forward with."
Osberg announced other changes under the "Project Liberty" initiative, including a relaunched Daily News in two weeks, and a "Sportsweek" edition of the Daily News on Saturdays.
He says the company will also serve as an incubator and host four digital startup firms in its offices.
