Philadelphia Man Surrenders In Murder of Overbrook Woman Caught In Crossfire
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A West Philadelphia man sought for a weekend shooting that claimed the life of an Overbrook mother of four surrendered to police late this morning to face murder charges.
Homicide Capt. James Clark says a relentless investigation by detectives -- and tips from the public -- led them to 19-year-old Daniel Shelley, the man they say killed 31-year-old Hafeezah Nunrid-Din on Saturday night as she was leaving her parents' home in the 5800 block of Malvern Street.
"We hit for him this morning at his house," Clark says. "He was not there. As a result of that, I believe, information got to him that we were looking for him, and along with his mother and family members, he turned himself in to Southwest Detectives."
Clark says Shelley rode into the neighborhood Saturday night on a bicycle, got off and apparently confronted a group of men who then ran past Nunrid-Din as she was getting into her father's car to get a ride home.
Capt. Clark says Shelley fired 10 shots at the group, but two struck Nunrid-Din in the back. He says her father pushed his wounded daughter into the car and drove her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead (see related story).
Clark says no one else was hit by the hail of bullets and says that police are still looking for the murder weapon.
