Philadelphia Man Sentenced For Fatal Hit-Run In Cheltenham

By Brad Segall

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A 25-year-old Philadelphia man will spend at least four years in state prison for leaving the scene of a deadly crash in Cheltenham (Montgomery County) earlier this year and then taking steps to try to cover up the crime.

George Humphrey was driving with an expired license in a car that had no registration and wasn't inspected when he struck and killed 53-year-old Michelle Powell on Cheltenham Avenue (photo below).  Powell was heading home to Philadelphia from her job at Walmart, in the Cedarbrook Mall.

Now, Humphrey has been sentenced to four to ten years behind bars and Powell's daughter Angel says the family has to try to move on.

"I was calling on God, and I knew that whether the judge's final decision was a short term or a long one, I knew that God had planned it at the end.  Whatever was going to happen, God was going to take care of it."

Humphrey apologized to the family and told them he was a coward for fleeing but had just panicked. Prosecutors say he had choices to make after the accident but decided to try to cover his tracks (see previous story).
