Philadelphia Man Convicted For Stealing Over 1,300 Identities

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia man was convicted for stealing more than 1,300 identities and using the information to order thosuands of dollars worth of merchandise.
A jury convicted 35-year-old David Ballard for stealing over 1,300 identities between January 2010 and April 2011. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Ouziel says Ballard used his victims' personal information to open credit cards and shop online.
"Typically expensive electronic equipment. There were camcorders, there were Playstations, there were laptop computers."
Ouziel says Ballard intercepted the items, trying to sell them on Craigslist.
"He would either do that by going, waiting at their house to try to pick it up. Or there were occasions when he would actually go pick it up himself at a UPS customer service facility."
Authorities say they're still not sure what methods Ballard used to take the identities and if anyone else was involved.
As for sentencing, Ouziel says it's based on damages and with retailers still reporting incidents, it's unclear what Ballard's punishment will be.
