Philadelphia L&I Unveils Newer, Friendlier, Info-Packed Web Site

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections says checking on contractors and landlords who operate in the city just got easier, thanks to the agency's new web site.
At phila.gov/LI, the Department of Licenses and Inspections has now posted all of its raw data, including construction and demolition permits, zoning violations, and business and rental licenses.
L&I spokesperson Maura Kennedy (at left below) says all of this is easily searchable so, for example, prospective renters could get the lowdown on landlords.
"You can make sure -- does everyone have their rental licenses that you're thinking of renting from? Has there been previous action of L&I enforcement? You can evaluate if your landlord is good at taking care of issues or is prone to issues," she explains.

Kennedy says the site will also help if you're looking to hire a legitimate contractor.
"People want to be able to see who's actually authorized to do work here in the city of Philadelphia. You can actually search for the type of contractor, make sure the person you're thinking about using is on the list and is working appropriately, and go from there."
There's no mobile phone app yet, but Kennedy says the site is smartphone friendly, so you can check on potential violations or report problems when you notice them in your neighborhood.
"We really want to make it very accessible and easy to use for the public," she tells KYW Newsradio.
