Learn About Beekeeping at Philadelphia Honey Festival

The unveiling of an historic marker in old city has launched the first ever Philadelphia honey festival being held at three venues in the city this weekend.

KYW'S Karin Phillips reports the new historic marker stands in front of 106 South Front Street, the home of the Father of American Beekeeping, Reverend Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth, who in 1852 patented a new kind of bee hive that prevented destruction of the bee colony when honey was collected.

Suzanne Matlock of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild says this weekend's festival is to educate the public on the importance of honey bees:

"About a third of the food we eat is pollinated by them. So you wouldn't have a good number of the fruits and berries, the squashes, cucumbers, watermelons, of that family of vine plants and a good number of flowers as well."
