Philadelphia Health Insurance Giant Tells Workers To ''Take A Walk'' -- For Exercise

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With ideal weather during today's noon hour, Independence Blue Cross and its employees came out onto Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia to invite everyone to a "Take a Walk at Lunch" celebration.

Music to get you moving filled a section of the park as dancers and singers and employees of the health insurance organization marked their fifth year encouraging office workers to get out from behind their desks and take a walk to improve their health.

"Tens of thousands of people are walking at lunchtime to send not only a symbolic message, but a real message that we need to invest in our health," said Independence Blue Cross president Dan Hilferty (far left in photo).

Mayor Michael Nutter donned a special T-shirt to mark the event and confessed that he, too, needs to do more walking.

"I can do the walking part -- sometimes I actually have to remember to have lunch to go with that," he joked.

Nutter, Hilferty, and hundreds of Blue Cross workers led a parade around Rittenhouse Square before workers began filtering back to their office buildings.
