Philadelphia Has Two Of The World's 50 Most Valuable Franchises
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Phillies and Eagles are two of the 50 most valuable sports franchises in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
Forbes, in its yearly ranking of the world's most valuable sports teams, has the Eagles ranked #15 at a value of $1.26 billion, and the Phillies ranked #41 at $896 million. The Flyers and Sixers do not make the list, but only three NBA teams made it (Lakers, Knicks, Bulls), and only one NHL team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, made the list.
Though the NFL takes up a good portion of the top 50, it's soccer that dominates the top five. Number one was Real Madrid at a value of $3.3 billion, followed by Manchester United at $3.165 billion and Barcelona at $2.6 billion. The New York Yankees at $2.3 million and Dallas Cowboys at $2.1 billion round out the top five.
One interesting thing that Forbes notes is that some of the most valuable franchises in the NFL, NBA and MLB have all skyrocketed in value despite a lack of playoff success. The Cowboys, Dodgers and Knicks have had very little post-season success over the last decade, but the values of the franchises have increased drastically.
