Philadelphia Flower Show Opens Door To Spring, Celebrates Movies
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It may be freezing outside, but inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, it looks like spring. The 187th Philadelphia Flower Show opened Saturday with its annual preview of spring. This year, the show celebrates Hollywood, especially Disney.
Visitors enter on a red carpet, under a floral marquee, and can find favorite movies interpreted as gardens. The brooms from Sorcerer's Apprentice are rendered in Ivy, pumpkins from The Nightmare Before Christmas in orange roses, and the undersea world of Finding Nemo recreated at eye level. The theme of celebrating movies lends itself to whimsical creations.
"Off in the background, it was Mulan and it was absolutely incredible."
"I liked the Ratatouille display and the Cinderella."
The displays are heavy on Disney themes, making it particularly family friendly. Horticultural Society president Drew Becher said he got a lot of good feedback at Friday's member preview.
"They say magical," said Becher. "I've heard magical a couple of times, which I think is pretty interesting."
Trevor Welsh has been coming for years.
"I think it's fantastic," he said. "It seems like visually they've designed it very nicely and the flowers are absolutely beautiful."
The displays feature plants that normally bloom in May side by side with those that normally bloom in June, August and September-- all in blossom at once to create that special Flower Show alchemy.
I come every year," said one long-time visitor. "I find it refreshing to know spring is around the corner and everything will be bright and beautiful."
