Philadelphia Firm Develops Star Trek Commemorative Stamps
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Trekkies from coast to coast are excited about a new set of postage stamps honoring the Star Trek TV and movie franchise that are due to come out later this year.
And they can thank artists at a Philadelphia firm who came up with the design.
The people at Heads of State studio in Old City have respect for the series. But co-owner Jason Kernevich isn't what you'd call a fan. So how did his firm get the work? He says the Postal Service consulted art experts in the DC area.
"The particular art director who was in charge of the Star Trek project had been familiar with our work," Kernevich told KYW Newsradio, "and reached out to us because he thought we'd be a nice fit for the kind of vintage-y, sci-fi look of the stamps."
He says the artists had two goals in mind for the four stamp set.
"To really capture the spirit of the original series, which is coming up on its 50th anniversary," he said. "That sort of vintage sci-fi feel, the limited color palate, kind of mid 20th century aesthetic. That was number one. And number two is making it work at the size of a postage stamp."
Kernevich teamed up with Dustin Summers a dozen years ago after they graduated from the Tyler School of Art at Temple to go into the business together and their work has been used by clients as diverse at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Subaru of America.
The Postal Service will issue the "Forever" first class stamps later this year.
