Philadelphia Councilman Sees Smooth Sailing For Sugarhouse Casino Expansion
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia City Council is being asked to sign off on the long-planned expansion of the Sugarhouse casino, and the local councilmember expects little to no opposition.
Sugarhouse next year hopes to begin construction of its second phase, says 1st District councilman Frank DiCiccio, "to expand their facility, create a multi-level parking garage, and more public space."
DiCicco (right) has introduced a bill to amend the zoning for the Sugarhouse site -- a bureaucratic move that will allow the expansion to move forward.
A hearing on the bill will allow neighbors to the site to weigh in. But with Sugarhouse up and running smoothly for more than a year, DiCicco expects little opposition.
"Since the day they opened we have never had one complaint about their operation, traffic problems -- nothing," DiCicco tells KYW Newsradio.
Sugarhouse officials say the expansion will cover ground north of the current facility, and will include a seven-story parking garage and a gambling floor nearly double the current size.
