AUSTIN, TEX. (CBS) -- A local biotech startup created by University of Pennsylvania grads was selected to compete in the South By Southwest annual pitch competition in Austin, Texas. Biobots didn't win top honors, but they did not go home empty-handed.
After losing to German startup Tinnitracks in the digital health and life sciences technologies category, BioBots was named "Most Innovative" at the South By Southwest Accelerator awards ceremony.
"The best health company is awesome, but dividing companies up into categories is always a tough thing," says Biobots cofounder Danny Cabrera. "It's a great honor for us to get Best Innovative"
Biobots makes 3-dimensional bio-printers used to produce living tissue. Going forward, Cabrera says they're going to go back to what they've been doing for the past six months.
"We're going to keep selling devices and moving into new industries, and developing new technologies," he says. "(We'll) basically continue to make our customers happy and delivering products to them that we know will help them meet their goals"
They have not decided how they will spend their $1,000 prize, but they are still looking for a round of funding.
