Philadelphia City Council Thinking About Market Street Revitalization
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Long term plans to revitalize Market Street east could get a shot next month with an ordinance before City Council.
"It ought to be Fifth Avenue, it ought to be Michigan Avenue in Chicago."
Paul Levy, president of the Center City District, says there have been plans for some time to turn Market Street from City Hall east to the Historic District into a better shopping district than it once was.
"What we need to do is build upon what are the strengths there, great historic buildings, places like the former Lits, places like Macy's and the hotels, but add in a great deal more retail that's oriented towards visitors as well as Philadelphia residents."
There have been plans before, as recently as last fall, to allow large-scale signs on the buildings along Market Street East. A revamped ordinance is scheduled to be heard June 7th that will allow large format street signs on properties where owners would make at least $10 million in improvement or renovations.
