City Council Close To Mandating Training For Bar Bouncers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - City Council is a step closer to requiring that bar bouncers in Philadelphia undergo training in use of force.
Among those testifying before the City Council committee was attorney Michael Saile, who is representing a man who was injured in a 2008 clash with bouncers at a Center City bar.
Saile said too many bouncers are hired without experience, and then are given little or no training,
"Some of them are experienced in the field for a few years, while others are hired simply because they have large builds and muscular frames. The interview process is quite simple, and many of them are hired and work the same night they are hired."
The committee approved a measure that requires all bar bouncers take a training course in crowd management and then register with the city. The course must be offered by a third party, like a security firm, not the bar itself. The full council votes on this next month.
