Philadelphia CEO Suggests You Empower The Team Around You
As the CEO of Brinker Capital, Inc, Ms. Noreen Beaman develops and executes the operating plan. She also oversees the company's long and short-term strategies. She has 20+ years of experience in her field. Noreen graduated from Saint Peter's University and is on the University's Board of Trustees.
What is your educational background?
"I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Saint Peter's University in Jersey City, New Jersey. With that degree, I became an auditor with Ernst and Young. That experience allowed me to get to know various industries. I became most interested in financial services because of the opportunity it presented to enhance my skill set and career. I also have the pleasure of guest lecturing in various forms to a wide range of young men and women."
How has your education fueled your management success?
"I have learned so much both in the classroom and through hands-on experience, and my management style continues to evolve.
I have also learned the importance of aligning oneself around various personality types. You have to be focused on making sure that everyone around the table feels that they are heard. Your job is to empower the team. You're no longer the doer or the manager, you need to create the opportunity for people who are now in the roles that you might have done in the past. Let them do their jobs and give them the freedom that you enjoyed as an employee.
I found time management to be one of the most important challenges I was faced with on a daily basis. As my career has progressed, I've learned that working more efficiently is paramount to sustained success. Understanding and prioritizing where I'm spending my time and how those choices lead to achieving key goals is among the most important skills I've learned, and one I strive to help others develop as an enabler of their own success."
What is your background in management?
"I have had the privilege of working at Brinker Capital for 26 years. Prior to becoming the chief executive officer, I served as the firm's chief operating officer responsible for policy and oversight of operations, administration, performance, reconciliation, technology and human resources. I have over two decades of investment experience working with financial advisers and institutional and high-net-worth investors in strategic planning and investment management. As one of Brinker Capital's original partners, I previously held a variety of regional and national sales positions at the firm, including new business development and client services in New York and New Jersey and was also the firm's chief financial officer.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?
"My advice is: show a willingness to take risks and do not be afraid of embracing opportunities. Have the confidence to take on a challenge or try something new. In the long run, our lives are shaped by the choices we make. Be fearless, work hard, find your passion and own it."
