Philadelphia Business Director Says Finding Solutions For Clients Is Rewarding
As the Director of Software Development at Wayne-based SkillSurvey, Ken Lubiski develops technology that helps companies effectively recruit hires and manage employees who drive business results. "SkillSurvey provides cloud-based solutions to help human resource professionals hire new employees more efficiently, as well as apply behavioral science to cull through the data and report the findings to prospective employers." Lubiski attended La Salle University where he received a bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting and management information systems. He received his Master of Business Administration degree from Saint Joseph's University, and a Master of Science in Engineering, Software Engineering from Pennsylvania State University-Great Valley.
What sort of education is needed to successfully do your job?
"Computer science and software engineering degrees will provide a great foundation for entering the IT field. I have also seen many very successful IT professionals come from other engineering degrees and business backgrounds. IT requires continual learning and keeping up-to-date with the latest technologies, so a passion for learning new technology and striving to be an expert in the business domain you currently support will serve you well."
What is the most relevant aspect of your education that applies to your day-to-day job?
"I would say my education has provided me a strong foundational understanding of core IT concepts and patterns to build upon as I have continued to learn new technologies and business domains throughout my career. With a strong foundation, you are set up to be able to learn anything new as you continue to confront new work experiences."
What is the most fun aspect of your job?
"The most fun aspect of my job is working with great teams to deliver IT solutions that solve problems for customers. For example, here at SkillSurvey, we've created new ways to reference check online and [find] credential doctors and other healthcare practitioners. It is always a great feeling when you see users find great value in the systems or IT infrastructure you and your team have helped to build."
What advice would you give someone just starting out in the field of technology?
"Keep learning. Make time to keep up-to-date in your field and be prepared to suggest and apply any new concepts or technologies you have learned to help solve real business problems where you are able to identify the need."
